Preparing for Worship: What Now? Step Up

Grace Office

If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’ | Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dear Grace Family,

God has a future for our congregation. This means he will continue to be present, loving, and active towards us in the upcoming months and years. This also means that he has good work for us to do.

One of the wonderful realities about God is that he is always sharing his work with us. Of course, he could complete his works of creation and redemption in the world without us. But he has consistently chosen not to do so. Instead, he blesses us as his image bearers by granting us dignity and agency as his co-laborers.

This means:

He wants you to tackle that difficult problem at work.
He wants us to raise the next generation in the faith.
He wants you to prayerfully work through your relationship challenges.
He wants us to offer cups of cold water in his name.

One of my mentors used to say this all the time:

The ministry of any congregation is the sum total of the ministry of its members.

In other words, the body of Christ needs every member to do its part.

I look forward to our second week of focusing our attention on Acts 1 & 2 and also re-visiting our Vision, Mission, and Values that we shared with you all last fall.

I don’t expect a nice, neat formula from the Lord. But at the same time, I do believe he will meet us as we ask him what is next for our congregation. He has good things in store for us.

I hope to worship with you on Sunday.

This Sunday: Acts 1:9-26 (NIV)
           “Now What? Step Up”

Here is the Order of Worship.

Warmly in Christ,

John

P.S. As I mentioned last week, you may also want to try this prayer out before going to bed. It is a wonderful way to end the day.
