Preparing for Worship: A New Day Has Dawned

I've been working here, Monday, it'll be a year.
And I can't recall a day when I didn't wanna disappear.
But I keep on showing up, hell-bent on growing up,
If it takes a lifetime.

I'm learning how to be alone, fall asleep with the TV on.
And I fight the urge to live inside my telephone.
I keep my spirits high, find happiness by and by,
If it takes a lifetime.

Dear Friends,

As I have gotten older, I begin to look back to past events in my life and say:

You know, I wish I would have known then what I know now.

At such times, I am not just expressing regret on ways that I may have failed to handle certain situations well. I am also giving voice to the reality that God is at work in my life. I am a different person now than I was 10 years ago. God is making me into a new person each and every day.

Such change should not be an anomaly for us. In fact, a careful read of the New Testament tells us that the Christian life is to be lived with an expectation of transformation. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5 that anyone in Christ is a “new creation”. With the same incredible power and majesty through which God made the heavens and earth from nothing, he is at work in his people, remaking us into the image of Christ.

This reality is not just meant to be a comforting thought. It is supposed to be something that we lean into. All throughout Scripture, we are commanded to begin living in new ways because God is at work. This is how Paul puts it in Romans 13:
The night is far gone; the day is at hand.
So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

This week, Bishop Stephen Scarlett will be preaching God’s word to us. Bishop Scarlett has been the Rector (Senior Pastor) of St. Matthew’s Church in Newport Beach, California for the last 31 years. I think you will be blessed by his ministry among us.

This week: Romans 13:8-14.

Liturgy is here.

I hope to worship with you.
