Preparing for Worship: Tree People (Psalm 52

For the body does not consist of one member but of many.

I Corinthians 12:14

Dear Friends,

A couple of weeks ago, Jess Alldredge started writing and compiling some of our worship liturgies. For the past couple of years, I had done these by myself. For many reasons, I am glad that Jess is now helping me with this.

Though I enjoy writing liturgy, the reality is our congregation needs to be formed and shaped by many voices, not just mine. By having someone else write some of our worship liturgies, the congregation will be blessed and shaped by someone else’s gifts, perspectives, and emphases. This is a good thing.

So it is with preaching.

For the next three Sundays, we are blessed to have Rev. Bill Boyd preach to us in worship. Bill is a faithful preacher, a good man, and a good friend. He has been an RUF Campus Minister, a church planter, and is now the Senior Pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Bill and I have gotten to know each other fairly well over the past several years as we have served on the Board of Covenant Theological Seminary together.

I regularly listen to Bill’s preaching on Mondays, which is my sabbath. He is thoughtful and careful with God’s word, and I believe he will be a gift to our congregation. He also has one of those southern accents that sounds like butter being spread on a biscuit.

Bill and his family will be staying in my house during their time in Seattle. Please do me a favor and say hello to Bill, Martha, and their children before or after worship in the upcoming weeks. I want them to experience a warm welcome here in our city and our congregation.

I will be leading worship this Sunday but will be gone the two Sundays after that.
